Empowering Lives Through Dance: Lexi & Jacky’s Stories
To start the year, we asked two incredible members of our community—Lexi Keskeys, a lead instructor, and Jacky Zhao, a dancer—to reflect on their experiences with Chance 2 Dance in New York City.

Lexi Keskeys: The Art of Teaching Inclusive Dance
Lexi Keskeys, a NYC C2D lead instructor and passionate advocate for accessible movement, shares how working with Chance 2 Dance students of all abilities has profoundly influenced her journey as an artist and educator. Through her experiences, she highlights the limitless potential of inclusive dance and the deep personal growth it fosters, both for her students and herself:
“Dance has always been a powerful form of expression, connection, and storytelling for me. But it wasn’t until I began working with students of all abilities through Chance 2 Dance that I truly understood the profound impact of inclusive dance. It has not only shaped my perspective as an educator but also transformed my journey as a performer in ways I never could have imagined.
When I first started teaching, I approached dance with the mindset of sharing my love for movement. I wanted to teach choreography, technique, and performance skills. But working with my students—each bringing their unique experiences, abilities, and energy into class—taught me that dance is so much more than perfecting steps. It’s about creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to move in ways that are authentic to them.
The beauty of inclusive dance lies in its limitless possibilities. I’ve witnessed students who use wheelchairs create breathtaking patterns with their movements, transforming a routine into something entirely unique. I’ve seen the joy on a student’s face when they’ve discovered their own rhythm or conquered a move they never thought possible. These moments remind me that dance is universal—it’s not confined to a single body type or skill level. Instead, it’s about finding the joy and freedom in movement, however it takes shape.”
As Lexi reflects, her role as a teacher is not just about technique but creating sensory-friendly and inclusive spaces where individuality and creativity thrive. She shares how watching hesitant students grow into confident dancers has shaped her own approach to performing:
“One of the most transformative aspects of this work has been watching how dance builds confidence. Many of my students come to class hesitant or unsure of themselves, but over time, they begin to shine. They take risks, collaborate with peers, and learn to celebrate their individuality. Witnessing this growth has inspired me to approach my own work as a performer with the same courage and authenticity. My students have taught me that vulnerability and openness on stage can be just as powerful as technical perfection.”
For Lexi, teaching special needs dance classes has also deepened her understanding of adaptability and creativity:
“Inclusive dance has also deepened my understanding of adaptability and creativity. As an educator, I’ve learned to tailor lessons to meet the needs of each individual while still fostering a sense of community and collaboration. This has challenged me to think outside the box and embrace improvisation—both in dance class and in life. It’s a skill that has made me a better teacher, a more thoughtful performer, and a more empathetic human being.”
Her experiences go beyond the studio. Lexi emphasizes how Chance 2 Dance is breaking down barriers and shifting perceptions about who belongs in the world of dance:
“Through this journey, I’ve come to realize that the power of inclusive dance goes far beyond the studio walls. It’s about changing perceptions, breaking down barriers, and showing the world what’s possible when we focus on abilities instead of limitations. It’s about creating a culture of belonging and reminding everyone that their voice—their movement—matters.
As I reflect on my time with Chance 2 Dance, I’m filled with gratitude for my students. They’ve challenged me to grow, to rethink what dance can be, and to celebrate the beauty of diversity. Their stories and strength inspire me every day, and I’m honored to be part of their journey. Inclusive dance has not only transformed their lives but has profoundly changed mine. And for that, I’ll always be thankful.”

Jacky Zhao: Finding Belonging Through Inclusive Dance
Chance 2 Dance’s New York City Ambassador and dancer Jacky Zhao’s journey has been one of perseverance and resilience. For much of his life, Jacky struggled to find spaces that welcomed his abilities and met his needs. Despite his determination to participate in activities and connect with others, a lack of accessible options and accommodations made him feel excluded. However, everything changed when Jacky discovered C2D.
Reflecting on his journey, Jacky shares the challenges he faced and the transformative impact of C2D’s inclusive environment:
“Having a disability is very tough without the appropriate accommodations. Ever since high school, I have always felt that my disability was a factor in me not fitting into the right community. Back then, I wanted to find activities and groups to join, but there were no accessible options, and the groups were not inclusive to my needs.
Even as I entered college, I was unable to get the right accommodations. I always wanted to participate in sports, but there were no adaptive physical sports teams for me to join. This was the case right up until I graduated with my Associate’s Degree in 2024; there were very few options for people like me, whether because of a lack of funding, staffing issues, or mistreatment.”
Jacky’s story is, unfortunately, one shared by many individuals with disabilities—a reality of limited opportunities, lack of inclusion, and barriers to participation. Yet, joining Chance 2 Dance marked a turning point:
“Since I started dancing with C2D, I was able to find my safe space and fit into this dance family. I am always able to express how I feel and what I want to do as a dancer. I’m able to use this as a creative outlet and to make friends.
C2D has helped me to bridge the gap and find a community to belong to. Chance 2 Dance doesn’t see disability—C2D only sees people’s potential despite any disabilities.”
Jacky’s journey highlights the profound importance of sensory-friendly activities and inclusive programs that create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to connect, express themselves, and thrive. At C2D, Jacky found not only a creative outlet through dance but also a community that celebrates diversity and empowers individuals to reach their full potential.
