Neurodiversity Celebration Week: Dancing to the Beat of Our Own Drum
By Lexi Keskeys — C2D NYC

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, and if you know anything about Chance 2 Dance, you know that celebrating different ways of thinking, moving, and experiencing the world is kind of our whole thing!
We don’t just make space for neurodiverse dancers — we thrive because of them. The way they see the world, the way they interpret movement, the way they bring their full, unfiltered selves into class; it’s inspiring. It teaches us all to be more open, more creative, and honestly, to find more joy in the little things.
Celebrating Neurodiversity and Pure Joy in Motion
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of dancing with Andy, one of our incredible adult students, you know exactly what I mean. Andy is the kind of person who walks into the room and immediately makes your day better. He’s got this contagious enthusiasm, always ready to try something new, always the first to crack a joke, and always 100% himself. Even when we’re working on something tricky, something that might feel frustrating to some, Andy just keeps going with a smile (and usually a funny comment to make the rest of us laugh).
One of my favorite moments with Andy was when we were trying out a new improv exercise. Some dancers hesitate in moments like that, worried about getting it “right.” Not Andy! He jumped in full force with a giant smile, swaying his hips while vigorously rolling his arms, like he was the star of his own Broadway show. It was joy in its purest form — completely unselfconscious, completely free. And in that moment, we all let go a little too.
That’s the magic of neurodiversity. It reminds us that there’s no single “right” way to experience the world. Some of us see patterns where others don’t. Some of us hear music in a way that makes us move differently. Some of us express emotions through dance in a way that words never could. And all of it is beautiful.
Embracing Authenticity Through Dance
I think, sometimes, the world makes us believe that we need to “fix” or “adjust” the way we think, learn, or interact to fit into a certain mold. But if you step into a Chance 2 Dance class, you’ll see the exact opposite. You’ll see dancers fully embracing who they are. You’ll see movement that is unique, uninhibited, and bursting with creativity. You’ll see people like Andy, reminding us all that life — and dance — isn’t about getting everything perfect. It’s about showing up, giving it your best, and having a blast along the way.
Thank you
So, as Neurodiversity Celebration Week comes to a close,, I just want to say: Thank you. Thank you to our dancers who bring their full selves into class, who teach us to see the world in new and wonderful ways. Thank you for your laughter, your energy, your willingness to be bold and free. You make our dance studio what it is!
And to Andy, thank you for always being the first one to jump in, the first one to laugh, and the first one to remind me why I love what I do. You make our dance floor a better place.
Happy Neurodiversity Celebration Week, friends. Keep dancing, keep learning, and most importantly… keep being YOU!
