Jacky’s Journey: How Chance 2 Dance Changed My Life

In this special blog entry, we hear a personal reflection from Jacky Zhao, C2D NYC dancer and ambassador, and the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award for 2025.
Jacky is 30 years old and was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City. Bilingual in English and Cantonese, he enjoys gaming, watching crime shows and movies, and spending time with friends. He is a proud graduate of the College of Staten Island, where he earned a degree in psychology, and formerly served as the PEBBLE Programs Operations Manager. Looking ahead, he hopes to pursue a master’s degree in forensic psychology.
Jacky is deeply committed to ensuring his friends and community members have the resources they need to thrive. He dreams of a fully accessible New York City and works hard to make that vision a reality. Loved by Chance 2 Dance teachers and dancers alike, Jacky is known for his enthusiasm, tenacity, and unwavering dedication to the organization.
From Student to Ambassador
If you told me years ago that dance would change my life, I wouldn’t have believed you. I have multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. I use a wheelchair and have very limited mobility, so dance always felt intimidating, like it wasn’t for people like me. But here I am, not only a dancer, but a proud ambassador for Chance 2 Dance (C2D), a place where I’ve grown in so many ways. C2D is like a second home. It’s where I built confidence, made friends who feel like family, and found a community that sees me, supports me, and celebrates me for who I am.
How It All Started
When I joined C2D, I didn’t know what to expect. I was searching for a place where I could express myself, where inclusion was more than just a word. From the very first day, I felt it. I was welcomed with open arms, no judgment, and no limits; just love, energy, and acceptance.
One of the greatest blessings in my journey has been my favorite teacher, Jackie Castore. I can’t thank her enough. She makes sure every dancer, no matter their ability, has a voice and a spotlight. She believes in us, pushes us to grow, and lifts us up with her kindness and dedication. Jackie, you’ve truly changed my life.
Giving Back and Representing C2D
As an ambassador, I represent C2D at events, welcome new students and families, and advocate for inclusion. One of my proudest moments was building a partnership between C2D and the College of Staten Island, my alma mater. Bringing these two communities together gave us more visibility and connected us with people who believe in the power of dance and inclusion.
This year, I was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year award, presented to me at our annual NYC showcase. Helping others has always been important to me, so being recognized for it in front of our community meant so much. Whether I’m helping out at events, cheering on dancers, or sharing C2D’s mission, it never feels like work – it feels right.
A Community and a Thank You
C2D has opened doors I never expected. I feel more connected to my peers with disabilities now than ever before. Thanks to C2D, I’ve met other CUNY students beyond my CSI campus, like at our workshop at Queens College with the Committee for Disabled Students. I’ve joined Best Buddies and made new friends in class who mean so much to me. I am even currently in the process of trying to start a CUNY Coalition for Disabled Students chapter at the College of Staten Island.
The people at C2D—volunteers, dancers, and teachers make it a true family. I’ve had tough days, but knowing I have this community makes everything easier. C2D has given me purpose, pride, and people who care. I’m stronger and more confident because of this organization. To our teachers, my fellow dancers, and every volunteer in both NYC and Florida – thank you for everything. And to anyone looking for a place to belong: C2D is it.
