What to Expect at Your First Inclusive Dance Class
By Lexi Keskeys, C2D NYC

Starting something new can be exciting — and a little bit nerve-wracking. At Chance 2 Dance, we understand that stepping into your first inclusive dance class is a big deal, both for students and their families. That’s why we’ve designed our classes to be predictable, welcoming, and joyful from start to finish.
As we kick off our 10th Chance 2 Dance season, we’re thrilled to welcome both familiar faces and brand-new dancers into our studio family. Whether it’s your first class or you’ve been with us from the beginning, we want every dancer to feel supported, understood, and celebrated for exactly who they are.
To make our classes as accessible as possible, we build in time for breaks whenever students need them. We incorporate American Sign Language (ASL) into every class, and we’re always adapting our format to meet each student where they’re at. That might mean changing how we demonstrate a movement, offering different props, or slowing down the pace of an activity — our goal is to make sure every dancer can engage in a way that feels good for them.
If you’re wondering what a typical class looks like, we’ve put together this guide to walk you through each part of the session. From warm-ups to cool-downs and everything in between, here’s what you can expect when you dance with us.
Welcome and Review the Schedule
We always begin by greeting each student and introducing the plan for the day. Using a visual schedule, we walk through each part of the class together so everyone knows what’s coming. This gives students a sense of security and helps build trust with their instructors.
For students who benefit from checking things off as they go, we provide visual or tactile tools to do so. This routine builds engagement and independence, and gives everyone a little boost as they see their progress through the class!
Warm Up and Stretch

Once we’re settled, we get our bodies ready to move with a gentle warm up. This section is all about loosening muscles, waking up joints, and finding focus through movement.
We always adapt our warm-ups to meet the needs of our dancers. Some students may warm up in their wheelchairs using arm stretches or adapted leg movements, while others may stretch their full body through a variety of isolations. We explore rhythm through clapping or stomping, giving each student a chance to connect movement with music in their own way.
Across the Floor: Building Dance Technique
Next up is one of the most exciting parts of class: Across-the-floor exercises! This is where we introduce the foundational techniques of dance, such as chassé, passé or relevé. We take time to explain what each technical term means and how it translates into physical movement. For example, we might break down a term like “plié” and show how it simply means “bend,” helping students connect language with action. We use accessible terminology so every student can understand the movement and feel confident giving it a try.
We encourage students to try these movements one at a time or in small groups, moving from one side of the room to the other. It’s a great way to build confidence, coordination, and body awareness, all while exploring the language of dance.
Coordination & Creative Movement Activities
After technique, we dive into fun activities that support skill building, socialization, and creative play. Depending on the day, we might use balance beams, cones, or obstacle courses, or we might play movement games that involve color matching using bean bags and rings.
These exercises are thoughtfully designed to support each student’s unique needs. Whether we’re working on fine motor skills, balance, or teamwork, every activity is adaptable and every accomplishment is celebrated.
Choreography: Learning Through Theme and Music

Each month at Chance 2 Dance features a new theme and corresponding music style. From hip hop’s bold, rhythmic beats to lyrical’s expressive and fluid motions, we use these themes to inspire the choreography portion of class.
Choreography is taught step-by-step, with lots of repetition and opportunities to personalize movements. Students are guided to mirror their instructor and explore their own interpretations — every approach is welcome. The focus is on expression, not perfection.
Cool Down and Prop Play
We close every class with a freestyle dance circle and prop activity. Using scarves, shakers, or other tactile objects, students are invited to move however they feel inspired. This is a time to celebrate, connect with classmates, and enjoy the music without any pressure.
The cool down allows students to regulate their energy and end class on a high note — calm, happy, and proud of what they’ve accomplished.
