Joyful July: Celebrating Disability Pride Month With Movement and Meaning
By Lexi Keskeys, C2D NYC

At Chance 2 Dance, every month is a celebration of the unique strengths, talents, and voices within our community — but July holds a special place in our hearts. Disability Pride Month is here, and with it comes an opportunity to reflect and continue advocating for a world where everybody can express themselves fully and freely.
Whether in the studio, on stage, or in daily life, our dancers prove that disability is not a limitation — it’s a different kind of brilliance. And this month, we honor that brilliance with pride!
Why July Matters: The History of Disability Pride Month

#DisabilityPrideMonth is celebrated every July as a way to promote acceptance of disability as an identity, a culture, and a vital part of our human community. It’s about more than awareness — it’s about honoring the resilience and beauty that people with disabilities bring to the world.
This month of celebration began in 1990, the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed into law. The ADA, signed on July 26, 1990, was a landmark civil rights moment, affirming the rights of people with disabilities to access, inclusion, and equality in all areas of public life.
That same year, Boston hosted the very first Disability Pride Parade — an event that set the stage for a growing movement across the country and the world. Since then, Disability Pride Month has become a powerful platform to challenge ableism, celebrate disabled voices, and push for lasting change.
At its core, this month reminds us that people with disabilities are not defined by what they can or cannot do — they are defined by their passions, talents, and the perspectives they bring to our shared world.
Dance & Movement as a Form of Pride

At Chance 2 Dance, we see Disability Pride in every twirl, every step, and every smile. Our dancers use movement not only as a form of self-expression, but as a statement of confidence and visibility. Whether it’s performing in front of a cheering crowd or simply finding joy in a weekly class, each dancer brings something beautifully unique to the floor.
Disability Pride Month gives us space to recognize that these performances, big or small, are acts of courage and celebration. They’re also reminders of what inclusive communities can do when we work together to remove barriers, create opportunities, and amplify every voice.
In the words of actor and cerebral palsy advocate RJ Mitte:
“Even though you have a disability, that does not make you disabled [in other ways]. It gives you insight. It gives you knowledge. It gives you something that someone without that will never learn.”
We see that wisdom and strength every day in our students. Their insight fuels our programs. Their creativity shapes our performances. Their joy is our greatest inspiration.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we also celebrate you — our students, families, staff, and supporters who make Chance 2 Dance what it is. Your energy, compassion, and commitment to inclusion are what keep our mission alive and growing. We couldn’t be more grateful for each and everyone one of you!
We invite you to reflect on what Disability Pride means to you, and to join us in honoring the beautiful diversity of our community, whether through dance, storytelling, or simply showing up with love.
Let’s keep dancing forward with pride — not just in July, but every day of the year!
